Environmental Impact on Health Fund

Mission Statement:

The Environmental Impact on Health Fund is dedicated to promote research on health issues resulting from exposure to environmental toxins and health issues that may be a consequence of the interaction between the environment, other animal species, and humans.

The Environmental Impact on Health Fund has been created to promote research to support progressive basic- and clinical-science research efforts toward understanding the etiology of a variety of different conditions that stem from exposure and sensitivity to toxins found in our environment and promote the One Medicine: One Health concept.

Although there are numerous substances that are linked to illness progression, the human body has a limited number of avenues to handle these insults. Thus, the future of research for prevention and treatment relies on obtaining critical information on the causative agents and an understanding of the common pathways that become compromised and lead to disease formation.

Environmental-induced illnesses are on the rise. Common, chronic medical and neuropsychiatric illnesses appear to be triggered or worsened by environmental factors.

One Medicine: One Health

Mankind has reached a health-science precipice, where understanding the interplay between human health, animal health, and the effect our environment has on health has become a critical research need. Strategic planning and cooperative research among all sectors of science (e.g., medical, veterinary, plant, chemical) is vital to sustain the environment and the health of all species for generations to come.

Medical-science research needs to embrace the "circle-of-life" scheme and pay more attention to: 1) measuring the levels of environmental chemicals in our bodies and their impacts on our health; 2) zoonotic diseases (those derived from other animal sources) that have the potential to adversely affect human health; 3) the food chain; and, 4) other interrelationships that can influence the health of all species.

The goal of the Environmental Impact on Health Fund is to support innovative research to address these problems and is committed to promoting and supporting research consistent with the One Medicine: One Health concept.
