Program Description
The Neurodegenerative Disorders Program Initiative is intended to support progressive basic- and clinical-science research efforts toward understanding the underlying cause of this family of disorders and identifying potential treatment regimens. The ultimate goal is to arrive at cures, so that countless thousands of people need not suffer from these debilitating disorders. The family of neurodegenerative disorders is relatively large and can be subdivided into several classes based on area or type of disease origin. The following is a brief outline of some of these classes accompanied by examples of associated disorders.
Central Nervous System origin (some with additional peripheral nervous system involvement)
- MS (Multiple Sclerosis)
- Alzheimer Disease
- Parkinson Disease
- Multiple Systems Atrophy
- Spinocerebellar Ataxia
Motor Neuron origin
- ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
- Spinal Muscular Atrophy
Genetic Metabolic Diseases
- Neuronal Strorage Disease
- Leukodystrophies (Krabbe Disease)
While each disorder displays its own characteristics, those within a class designation and some between classes may share some features in common. Thus, there is hope that research efforts targeted to one disorder may provide useful insights into other related disorders as well.
