Professor Alan Paine is Professor of Toxicology at King's College London, where he leads the Molecular & Cellular Toxicology Research Group. In addition, Professor Paine serves as Chair for King's College's Centre for Pharmaceutical & Chemical Safety. From 1984 to 1999, he was the Deputy Director of the UK Department of Health's Toxicology Unit, where he assessed real world risks of various industrial, medical and community practices. In addition, Professor Paine has served as Clinical Trial Advisor to St Bartholomew's Hospital Ethical Committee (1987-92) and as a Career Grade Scientist at the UK Medical Research Council (1975-84).
Professor Paine is the published author of over 100 research papers in scientific journals and has contributed chapters to several books that cover the design of toxicology studies. He has held memberships with the Editorial Boards of The Biochemical Journal (1992-97), Biochemical Pharmacology (1985-96) and Deputy Editorship of Journal of Human & Experimental Toxicology (1992-97). His recent research topics include the application of proteomics in drug development and risk of environmental chemicals to humans, the mediated drug metabolism and toxicity of hepatic cytochrome P450, and tissue engineering to create liver assist devices.
Professor Paine possesses extensive experience as a grant reviewer with organizations on both sides of the Atlantic, including The Wellcome Trust (UK), the UK Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (UK), the National Science Foundation, (Washington, DC), the International Life Sciences Institute (Washington, DC) and the Canadian Medical Research Council.
Having attained a BSc in Biochemistry from King's College and a PhD in Biochemical Pharmacology from University College in London, Professor Paine went on to receive a MRCPath in Toxicology and FRCPath from the Royal College of Pathologists, a DSc in Molecular Cell Biology from the University of London, and a CBiol and FIBiol from the Institute of Biology. |
