Professor John Gorrod is Professor of Toxicology at the University of Essex, a post he took up following his formal retirement from King's College London where he had been Research Professor and Professor of Biopharmacy. He was previously Head of Pharmacy at King's
The major research topics of Professor Gorrod are a) The Biological Oxidation of Nitrogen in Organic Molecules including e structure/activity relationships, enzymology and the pharmacological and toxicological consequences of the processes and b) the Metabolism, Distribution and Excretion of Nicotine and the Minor Tobacco Alkaloids.
Professor Gorrod has published over 300 scientific articles and has edited 12 books on Xenobiochemistry (Foreign Compound Metabolism), and Toxicology. He is on the editorial Board of numerous Journals in the fields of Drug metabolism and Toxicology. He was a founder member of the International Society for the Study Of Xenobiotics (ISSX) and became President of the Society during 2000 & 2001.
Professor Gorrod has considerable experience reviewing grant applications submitted to Government bodies, charities and the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. He has carried out site visits and evaluated the standards and achievements of individuals and institutions.
