The Institute has received an unrestricted grant from the British American Tobacco Company. The Institute's Board of Directors and its Advisory Council on Tobacco Science and Health Policy directed that the unrestricted grants should be used by the Institute to sponsor specific areas of tobacco-related research related to reduction of harm associated with tobacco-based products.

In the research focus some specific priorities and areas of interest for the RFA are presented. The focus is not meant to be exhaustive. Any submission that is consistent with the overall purpose of the program as stated in this document will be considered.

The research needs for this RFA are in the following areas:

  • Long and Short Term "Intelligent" Biomarkers of Exposure and Harm
  • Biomarkers of Biological Effect
  • The development of improved animal models for understanding the pathogenesis of diseases attributable to tobacco usage, including in vitro applications and the use of proteomics and genomics.
  • Improved Understanding of Tobacco Constituent Toxicity, including Dose Response Relationships, and Aerosol Deposition and Constituent Uptake from smokeless products.

Because research can be interdisciplinary, many projects may include research in more than one of the aforementioned areas. Collaboration within or outside of one's own institution, especially when it strengthens the overall development and the results of the project, is encouraged.

The Institute offers two types of grant opportunities, Seed Grant Projects or Full Research Projects. These are described within the RFA2007A details and in our Research Process
